If you’re a writer, Reedsy is a website some of you may have heard of. If you haven’t, I highly recommend checking it out and seeing if it’s a good fit for you. I’d like to take a moment to list some highlights and features, as well as share my experience on their website.
The main draw of Reedsy is its weekly prompts and competitions. They have new, different categories with one overarching theme each week. Some of the more recent themes include Librarian Love, Take a Picture, It’ll Last Longer, and It’s Called Fashion, Look it Up.
Writers can choose to either submit their story in a competition for a $5 fee, or just publish it to their profile for free. The winner of the competition is given a $250 award, so there’s a nice incentive to participate.
Another interesting aspect of this site is that your stories can receive likes and comments, which produce karma points. These points can make your stories and your profile more reputable. It’s also a great tool to build your experience and get your name out there.
It’s generally considered that the more karma points a profile have, the more popular its content is. Here’s s snippet from Reedsy about some of the technical details of Karma points:
“Karma is awarded to authors who contribute to the community. You can gain karma by submitting stories, winning contests, and gaining upvotes on your comments. Here’s the breakdown:
Receiving likes on a story or comment = 1 points
When your story is approved = 10 points
If you win a contest = 100 points”
I’ve participated in some competitions in the past when it was free to enter. Reedsy has gotten bigger since then, so they needed to put a fee on it to filter the overwhelming submissions. The prize increased, too, growing from $50 to $250 for the winner.
Reedsy also has a blog posting advice, news, and more. They offer publishing courses, webinars, a book editor, a book launching tool, and a marketplace to discover and utilize.
Reedsy also offers a number of other tools, including:
